Emerald - May Birthstone

Emerald is both the birthstone for May and the Zodiac stone for Cancer. Emerald is the green variety of the mineral Beryl. Its colour is caused by the small amounts of chromium and iron contained in it. Its beautiful green colour, combined with durability and rarity, make it one of the most valuable gemstones. Deep green is the most desired colour of emerald.

Emerald symbolises fidelity and goodness. It was thought to preserve love and for long time has been considered a symbol of hope. For some people the emerald acts as a tranquilizer for a troubled mind and is said to bring the wearer reason and wisdom.

Emeralds are known for their flaws. They are not looked on as negative aspects as they would with other gemstones. Indeed, these flaws are considered as part of the character of the stone and they help customers to ensure they are buying a natural stone.

If you prefer a green gemstone other than emerald,you may look for Chrysoprase which is a variety of chalcedony, the colour normally being apple-green.
